Hazmat Awareness / Operations
Course Objective
To provide students with the knowledge, skills and abilities to perform hazardous materials first response. Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to analyze a hazardous materials incident, plan an initial response, implement the response, and evaluate the progress of the actions taken.
Major topics covered in this course include firefighter safety, regulations and standards, chemistry, recognition and identification, DOT emergency response guidebook, site management, container behavior, defensive control measures, personal protective equipment, decontamination, and terrorist and other criminal activity. This extended course also includes evidence preservation and sampling as well as response to illicit laboratories.
Written and practical examinations for final IFSAC/Pro Board Certification.

Instruction Methods:
Methods of instruction include lecture, discussion, virtual classroom exercises, case studies, Microsoft Teams Virtual audio/visual material, learner presentations/reports, quizzes.
Course Materials:
Includes handouts, quizzes, class projects and discussion.
Text: IFSTA Hazardous Materials for First Responders, 6th Edition(Students Responsibility)
Class Size:
10 students minimum; 25 students maximum.
Registration Instructions:
Prerequisites: Must be eighteen years or older.
